Glass Rock - 2010 - Tall Firs Meet Soft Location

Ecstatic Peace regulars Tall Firs join forces with Soft Location, who were introduced to one another by that other longstanding EP act, Awesome Color. Spearheading this record is the sultry vocal presence of Kathy Leisen, whose singing somehow conjures references to both Chan Marshall and Neko Case whilst not sounding especially like either. There is a certain authoritative presence to Leisen's vocal, whose delivery is crowned with a tangible atmospheric resonance on these recordings, cradled in a delicate web of clean guitar tones and expertly poised drumming. There's an air of restrained yet ultimately very solid musicianship throughout the record that's reminiscent of the sonic backdrops heard on Cat Power's Jukebox album. 'Possession' is especially powerful with its thread-like guitar lines and pent-up tom hits, creating the most subtle of contexts for Leisen to take command and flourish.

Tam first started playing rhythm guitar in a Django Reinhardt cover band,"swing dynamic' in 1990, 6 years later she left the jazz world to form an oasis cover band, then switched to her own material. initially called the Butchershop with ex-go Van Gogh members, the first cd was recorded, also working with leloup guitarist mark lamb. later 'the vampires' was born with Andrew Nesvadba and Johnny Graham and a 6 song cd was recorded at Joey's studio in Montreal. Tam then left to do a small solo tour of manchester, uk,to promote the cd, performing at night and day, star and garter and of course, the blue cat in Heaton moor. she dropped off her demos at Peggy Gallagher's house and is impatiently awaiting support from noel's big brother label. She soon began tracking down Thurston Moore who defiantly played one of the many cds she kept throwing at him and he got hooked. He compiled his favorite Tam tunes in this somewhat retrospective cd. most are originals -- some, like arcade fire’s “nocarsgo” are covers. They all are great.

Experimental psych trio Liars had launched Thesisterworld.com, a mysterious new website. The band has come right out and announced that yes, a new album is coming, and, yes, it's called Sisterworld.
The band's fifth studio LP is due early next year from Mute.
The band wrote and recorded the album in Los Angeles with Tom Biller, a composer and producer who has worked extensively with Jon Brion. So: strings, maybe? It's the first Liars album to be recorded entirely on American soil since their freaked-out 2004 effort They Were Wrong, So We Drowned.
In a statement, the band said this about the album: "We're interested in the alternate spaces people create in order to maintain identity in a city like L.A. Environments where outcasts and loners celebrate a skewered relationship to society." Yup, sounds like a Liars album!
