HANDS ON HEADS are a quartet from London who stand up for premeditated sunshine punk. Finding inspiration in the unresting experimentation of groups like XTC and the Associates, as well as the no-nonsense approach of grunge, the group discovered a set of songs that uncover the surprise and revolutionary potential of our everyday lives through dysfunctional pop music. Drums leap, pound and skip allowing the hyper-melodic bass and organ lines to entwine. The vocals and guitar often double up and push and pull the songs around their haunted compass.

T.I.T.S are four ladies from San Francisco known singularly as Kim West, Abbey Kerins, Mary Elizabeth Yarbrough and Wendy Farina. Their name is a "revolving" acronym, with one of the finer ones being Technicolor Inner Troll Syndrome. The quartet ply their trade in a kind of witchy, experimental doom-laden pop, which could easily evoke reminiscences as diverse as Sabbath, The Shop Assistants, Boris, or Christian Death with some Terry Riley/Eno repetition added for good measure. The T.I.T.S sound is underpinned by Mary Elizabeth's tumbling darkened bass lines and Wendy's totally animal drum pound. Abbey's guitar lays down the acerbic riff, while Kim's emits a subtly oscillating sheet of feedback. Over the top, all four harmonise with a kind of semi-operatic, fantasy whisper. The effect is this inexplicable feel of time-travelling castle metal - of four ladies of the lake casting forth a single Excalibur, sinking it into stone so deep, no Arthur shall ever wield it.

Batcomputer was a band formed solely as a temporary means to vent the painful hurricane within. When the lyrical message got redundant and they were tired of turning knobs, whining about ex-girlfriends and breaking equipment, they decided their short-lived life was well-lived and complete. They were from Annapolis, MD and made up of members of the post-rock octet Sawhorse, a spastic screamo band called Age Sixteen, Annapolis's own space-rock outfit A Perfect Kiss, tech/noise grinders Lilu Dallas, and maybe some others that were too horrible to bother mentioning. They had a pretty DIY attitude toward things, but who knew they wouldn't sell out like crazy if offered a sweet record deal from Capitol or sponsorship from Monster Energy Drinks. The band enjoyed drowning everything they performed in so many effects that you couldn't really understand what was going on. As long as the emotion and the haunting melody was still somewhat audible, their goals were being accomplished. The lyrics were not mirrors of who they were but stories full of exaggerations and poetic curve-balls in order to portray their selfish and/or shameful emotional state we all sometimes find ourselves in. They recorded a song for a Mineral tribute album to be released sometime this winter by Crank! Records. Batcomputer loved and appreciated all who support them.

Anna Kashfi is also the name of a band from Manchester based around the core duo of singer Sian Webley and multi-instrumentalist and producer James Youngjohns. Together they play dreamy, melancholic music that crackles with the memories of past mistakes, missed opportunities and the emotional games played by lovers in battle. Their new album 'Survival' (out January 18th 2010) reflects the duality and tragedy of the real-life Anna Kashfi. It's about that sense of characters being vulnerable to the whims of the world and circumstance, of the thin-line between existing and being wiped-out forever. Many of Webley's words unpick the conflicts between lovers and the emotional battles played out in relationships and she builds on those games with 'Devil's Bridge'. A duet, of sorts, with Robert Fisher of kindred spirits Willard Grant Conspiracy, the song relates the story of how the townsfolk of a Tuscan town tricked the devil into building their bridge for free.
